In brief: Nicaragua authorises more mining licences

*Nicaragua’s authoritarian government led by President Daniel Ortega has authorised two more mining lots, both to Chinese firm Thomas Metal SA owned by Chinese businessman Gu Xiangming. According to the official gazette, which published the details of the concessions, the mining & energy ministry (MEM) has authorised one lot spanning 8,308.9 hectares (ha) and another spanning 800 ha both in Villanueva municipality, Chinandega department. This follows the authorisation earlier this week of a mining concession spanning over 36,600 ha to Chinese-owned company Nicaragua Xinxin Linze Minería Group, S.A in the municipalities of Siuna and Mulukukú, in the indigenous North Atlantic autonomous region (Raan).
