In brief: Chile imposes temporary tariffs on Chinese steel

*Chile’s government led by President Gabriel Boric has published decrees imposing six-month anti-dumping tariffs on Chinese steel products. One decree stipulated that tariffs of 33.5% have been imposed on imports of steel balls from China for six months from 27 March 2024. The second stated that tariffs of 24.9% have been imposed on the steel bars used to make such balls for the same time period. This comes after Chilean steel producer Compañía Siderúrgica Huachipato (CSH), part of the mining and industry conglomerate Grupo CAP, last week gave the government an ultimatum: that it raise import tariffs on Chinese steel to at least 25% or else the company permanently shut down operations. In February, unionised workers from Chile’s Compañía Siderúrgica Huachipato, the steel division of CAP located in Biobío region, also asked the government for measures to safeguard against the impact of Chinese steel imports on the sector.
