MEXICO: Morena guns for Piña over Zaldívar probe

Mexico’s supreme court (SCJN) announced on 17 April that it will investigate Arturo Zaldívar, the former chief justice of the SCJN, for “administrative failings”. Zaldívar vehemently denies the allegations, contained within a wide-ranging investigation announced on 12 April by Notitia Criminis, a website covering the Mexican judiciary. Zaldívar accused Norma Piña, his successor at the SCJN, of being politically motivated and of seeking “revenge” against justices on the top court and President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and his ‘fourth transformation’ (4T) government. López Obrador, a close ally of Zaldívar’s, concurred and his ruling left-wing Movimiento Regeneración Nacional (Morena) is taking steps to try and impeach Piña.
