On 18 April the US government reversed the relaxation of oil and gas sanctions on Venezuela that had been in force for the preceding six months in return for the government of Nicolás Maduro convening presidential elections with some semblance of fairness. Maduro has called elections but there is no prospect of their being fair. The next deadline in Venezuela’s ongoing political crisis - for any changes to be made among the 13 presidential candidates already approved - falls on 20 April.
