In brief: Google opens office in El Salvador

*US tech company Google has announced the opening of new offices in El Salvador’s capital, San Salvador. This follows a collaboration agreement signed in August 2023 by the US firm and Salvadorean government led by Nayib Bukele. In a statement, Google describes the opening of the new offices as “an important step… in our commitment to help support the country’s digital transformation, including the modernisation of its government services and economic development.” Google also highlights progress with regard to its collaboration with the Bukele government in the areas of digital government, health and education. As regards digital government, it notes the development of “simple digital ecosystems for import, export, health and sanitary registration”. In the area of health care, Google says that it has “trained different government agencies on how to use cloud technologies”, adding that it is now “supporting the government in the development of its telemedicine platform with cutting-edge technologies, like artificial intelligence, to automate processes and bring more access to health services in the country”. In terms of education, Google highlights that, building on a collaboration with El Salvador’s education ministry since 2020, it is supporting a long-term project “putting technology at the centre of improving teaching and learning in the nation's public education system”.
