In brief: Nicaragua’s economic growth slows

*Nicaragua’s central bank (BCN) has released new figures for its monthly index of economic activity (IMAE), registering 3.4% year-on-year growth in January 2024. The January year-on-year figure is down from 5.0% year-on-year growth in December 2023 and was driven by hotels & restaurants (+12.4%), trade (+11.3%), and construction (+10.5%). Meanwhile fishing & aquiculture was down 12.3% year-on-year, while agriculture was down 7.3%. In seasonally adjusted terms, the IMAE for January was down 1.7% on the previous month, while in year-on-year seasonally adjusted terms, it was up 2.5% compared with January 2023.
