BRAZIL: Structural inequalities worsen dengue outbreak
Brazil’s federal health ministry reported on 18 March that national dengue cases in 2024 have surpassed the total cases registered for the whole of 2023, hitting an annual record of 1.89m cases. The spike in cases has been widely attributed to climate change and the El Niño weather phenomenon, which have caused an expansion in the habitat of the mosquitos that spread the disease. However, public health researchers in Brazil have also pointed out structural inequalities contributing to the proliferation of mosquitos, such as poor sanitation services in marginalised urban areas.
