BRAZIL: Top court debates jurisdictional privilege for politicians

The supreme court (STF) heard a case on 29 March regarding the constitutional right granted to public officials known as ‘foro privilegiado’, which means that certain politicians, such as the president and members of the federal congress, cannot be prosecuted in any court lower than the top court. The STF is reviewing whether this privilege should be extended to officials even after they have left office. The case comes amid recent criminal investigations into officials such as federal deputy Chiquinho Brazão (União Brasil) and former president Jair Bolsonaro (2019-2023).
