BRAZIL: Lula’s reluctance to mark 1964 coup anniversary

Activist groups held events in major Brazilian cities, such as São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, on 31 March to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the military coup which launched a dictatorship in Brazil (1964-1985). However, the government led by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has not held any official commemorations, widely seen as part of efforts to shore up relations between the Lula administration and the armed forces.
