​COLOMBIA-VENEZUELA: Petro hardens stance on Maduro

The election of Colombia’s President Gustavo Petro in 2022 was a major boost for Venezuela’s authoritarian head of state Nicolás Maduro, giving the isolated Maduro administration a route back into regional discussions. Now, however, Petro is moving to distance himself from Maduro by condemning the disqualification of Venezuelan opposition candidate María Corina Machado from competing in the upcoming presidential elections. Petro’s move to join the region’s general criticism of Maduro came as his administration also sought to repair relations with Argentina following a row with the country’s far-right president, Javier Milei.
