In brief: Brazil’s industrial production registers monthly drop

*Brazil’s national statistics institute (Ibge) has released its latest figures for the country’s industrial production, showing a monthly drop of 0.3% in February. This marks a second consecutive monthly drop. However, compared with February 2023, industrial production was up by 5.0%. Accumulated industrial production in the 12 months until February 2024 was also up by 1.0% compared with the preceding 12-month period. Of the 25 categories of industrial products measured, 10 registered monthly drops in production. The categories which registered the greatest decreases were pharmaceutical products (-6.0%), printing and recording equipment (-4.7%), chemical products (-3.5%), and extractive industries (-0.9%). The former three categories registered monthly increases in production in January, while the latter marks its second consecutive month of declining production figures.
