MEXICO: López Obrador mollifies China

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador sought to defuse incipient tensions with China by insisting that Mexico does not want to get involved in any kind of war, “not even a trade one”. He was speaking after Mexico slapped a 3%-12% tariff on imports of steel balls from China, and a 31% provisional compensatory tariff on steel nails earlier this month after the conclusion of anti-dumping investigations. The comments were well-received by China whose foreign ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said the two countries were “good friends and good partners”.
