MEXICO: Tren Maya derailment assumes electoral dimension

Both the Mexican government and the political opposition have seized on the 25 March derailment of a carriage of the new Tren Maya tourist train, one of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s high-profile projects, in an attempt to gain political capital. López Obrador minimised the accident but said the possibility of intentional sabotage should be investigated. The presidential candidate for the main opposition coalition Fuerza y Corazón por México, Xóchitl Gálvez, also called for an investigation; she has accused López Obrador’s family of involvement in corrupt contracts linked to Tren Maya.
