GUATEMALA: Reaping the benefits of strengthened US ties

Days after Guatemala and the US held their first-ever High-Level Economic Dialogue (HLED) in Guatemala City [WR-24-11], President Bernardo Arévalo paid his first visit to Washington since taking office in January, meeting President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris. The meetings, which produced new agreements and promises of cooperation, again underline strengthening bilateral ties under the new Guatemalan government led by Arévalo, whose anti-impunity platform and pro-democracy credentials align with Washington’s objectives of tackling irregular migration through addressing the root causes of corruption and criminality as well as providing economic opportunities.
