Venezuelan opposition to contest election with ‘provisional’ candidate
Following a last-minute reprieve from the national electoral council (CNE), Venezuela’s opposition coalition Plataforma Unitaria Democrática (PUD) will compete in the 28 July election against President Nicolás Maduro. It will not, however, be doing so with the candidate it desires – the disqualified María Corina Machado – nor even with its ‘Plan B’ candidate, the academic Corina Yoris, who was blocked from registering on the CNE’s online system. Instead, the opposition torch is set to be carried by Edmundo González, a former career diplomat. González, too, could be substituted, with the PUD acknowledging that his nomination is “provisional”.
