Provinces express concern over May Pact
Uproar over the relationship with the provinces, coupled with wider protests by labour unions, seem to have persuaded Milei to make a new attempt to get his reforms approved in a slightly more consensual manner. In a speech to congress at the beginning of March the president launched a new initiative, to be known as the “May Pact”. The idea is that in the run-up to 25 May (the anniversary of Argentina’s independence from Spain) a group including all 23 governors, the mayor of Buenos Aires city, former presidents, and other political leaders will discuss a government proposal to agree 10 “strategic” pillars for governance. However, the government position remains that, as a precondition, congress must still approve the omnibus law before the provinces sign off on the May Pact.
