*Mexico’s government has said that the herbicide glyphosate will continue to be used in agriculture until “a broad-spectrum, low-toxicity herbicide alternative” is found, according to a new government statement. Referencing a presidential decree published on 13 February 2023, which ordered the gradual replacement of glyphosate by 31 January 2024, the government said that decision stems from the need to safeguard the country’s agro-food security. The statement by the economy ministry (SE), environment ministry (Semarnat), agriculture & rural development ministry (Sader), and the federal sanitary protection agency (Cofepris) reported that they are working to find options with sufficient supply, “associated with national marketing chains and that are affordable for all types of producers”.
