Brazil has launched investigations into an alleged criminal network within the national intelligence agency (Abin) that carried out illegal surveillance for the benefit of far-right former president Jair Bolsonaro (2019-2023). This March edition of the
Latin American Regional Report: Brazil & Southern Cone begins with a focus on the scandal which has shaken the intelligence agency and considers its political ramifications. The illegal spying activities were allegedly carried out during Bolsonaro’s presidency under former Abin director Alexandre Ramagem (2019-2022).
