Caribbean & Central America - March 2024

We begin the March 2024 edition of the Latin American Regional Report: Caribbean & Central America in Guatemala where, since taking office mid-January, President Bernardo Arévalo has declared the fight against extortion a key security priority. Unlike his peers in El Salvador and Honduras, who have suspended constitutional guarantees and deployed the military to fight extortion as part of a crackdown on gangs, President Arévalo has indicated that he intends to tackle the issue using democratic means.
