Weekly Report - 21 March 2024 (WR-24-11)

Haitians remain stuck in limbo with armed gangs still controlling vast swathes of the capital Port-au-Prince and a presidential transition council yet to be formally appointed since the resignation of the prime minister, Ariel Henry, in order to pave the way for fresh elections to be held. The national police (PNd’H) managed to thwart an attack on the Haitian central bank (BRH) on 18 March, reporting that at least four of the assailants had been killed. The PNd’H have also attempted to retake control of the capital’s main port from gangs led by Jimmy ‘Barbecue’ Chérizier. Gangs, meanwhile, have launched attacks on affluent neighbourhoods in Port-au-Prince and razed the house of the chief of the PNd’H to the ground.
