Haiti’s prime minister, Ariel Henry, has confirmed that he will step down once a transitional presidential council is inaugurated, and an interim prime minister named. Henry’s departure was widely expected given that Haiti has been in the grip of a severe crisis since the end of last month [WR-24-09]. The withdrawal of foreign backing for Henry, who took over unelected in July 2021 following the assassination of former president Jovenel Moïse (2017-2021) and failed to deliver on a pledge to hold elections, ultimately proved decisive. The announcement regarding his departure was made at an emergency summit attended by representatives from the Caribbean Community (Caricom), US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, and others.
