*The Ecuadorean mining lobby Cámera de Minería (CME) has announced that mining exports totalled a record US$3.32bn in 2023, up more than 19% from 2022. “This achievement consolidates the sector as the fourth most exported category in the national economy”, said the CME in its statement. The statement also highlighted mining’s effects on employment and tax collection – with a total of 96,823 jobs registered in the sector in the third quarter of 2023, and tax collection from the mining industry rising to US$762.72m in 2023. The CME highlighted in particular the southeastern province of Zamora Chinchipe, “which has maintained constant growth in its sales since the beginning of construction and production of the two large-scale mines in Ecuador in 2019”. The province recorded a 4% increase in its annual turnover, reaching US$2.5bn.
