HAITI: Political progress at last, but security still dire

As we went to press Haiti’s security situation had reached a new low amid a series of attacks coordinated by the country’s top gang leader Jimmy ‘Barbecue’ Chérizier, with the stated aim of bringing down the government. These took place in the absence of Prime Minister Ariel Henry who had left the country for a regional summit before travelling on to Kenya. He remains stranded in Puerto Rico, unable to return as Haiti's main international airport was shuttered amid the gang attacks.
