GUATEMALA: Arévalo’s initial security moves

Since taking office mid-January, Guatemala’s new President Bernardo Arévalo has declared the fight against extortion a key security priority. In contrast to his peers in El Salvador and Honduras, who have suspended constitutional guarantees and deployed the military to fight extortion as part of a crackdown on gangs, President Arévalo has indicated that he intends to tackle the issue using democratic means.
