Brazil’s intelligence agency shaken by spying scandal

The deputy director of Brazil’s national intelligence agency (Abin), Alessandro Moretti, was dismissed on 30 January for allegedly having maintained contact with the agency’s former director Alexandre Ramagem (2019-2022), whose properties were raided five days earlier. Police suspect that Ramagem, a close ally of former president Jair Bolsonaro (2019-2023), oversaw illegal surveillance activities for the benefit of Bolsonaro and his allies during Bolsonaro’s presidency, in what would constitute an abuse of the state’s intelligence apparatus.
