GUATEMALA: Moving against Porras

Guatemala’s new government led by President Bernardo Arévalo, whose electoral victory last August owed to his pledge to take on the ‘pacto de corruptos’ network of institutional corruption, has called for discredited attorney general María Consuelo Porras to be stripped of her immunity from prosecution over a criminal complaint. Aligned with the ‘pacto de corruptos’, Porras was behind the judicial efforts to derail Arévalo’s victory and prevent the transfer of power on 14 January [WR-23-50]. Her continuance in the post remains a major obstacle to Arévalo’s anti-corruption agenda, however, and with his call for her to resign rebuffed [WR-24-04], the government is seeking to have her removed through alternative channels.
