COLOMBIA: Petro shakes up cabinet

Colombia’s President Gustavo Petro conducted a mini reshuffle this week which saw the most independent-minded technocrat left in the cabinet sidelined and close allies promoted. Alejandro López, a former senator for the left-wing Polo Democrático Alternativo (PDA), takes over as the new director of planning (DNP). He replaces Jorge Iván González, who had survived previous shake-ups despite signing a letter criticising Petro’s health reform. Former senator Gustavo Bolívar takes over at the social prosperity department (DPS), which has ministerial status, replacing Laura Sarabia, Petro’s former chief of staff and closest adviser, who has been appointed as head of the influential administrative department of the presidency (Dapre).
