Gig economy regulation bill. The government led by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva presented a draft bill on 5 March which aims to boost labour rights protections for drivers working for ride-hailing and delivery apps such as Uber. This marks the first major legislative proposal from the Brazilian government since Lula and US President Joe Biden announced a bilateral partnership for workers’ rights in September 2023. One of the main points of the Lula administration’s draft bill is defining a minimum wage for drivers working on digital platforms; the current proposal is R$32.09 (US$6.50) per hour. Other provisions of the bill include setting a maximum 12-hour working day for a driver to work on one platform.
