In brief: Job creation down year-on-year in Mexico

*Mexico’s national social security institute (IMSS) has released a new report showing it had registered 22.29m jobs as of 29 February 2024. According to the IMSS, 86.0% of these jobs were permanent while 14.0% were temporary. In February, 156,403 jobs were created, an increase of 0.7% on the previous month but a decrease of 11.1% compared to the 175,874 jobs created in February 2023. This brings the total number of jobs created this year to 265,424, down 7.7% on the 287,573 created in the first two months of last year, with 60.5% of these being permanent roles. In the last 12 months, 629,341 jobs were created, which the IMSS states is 15.8% more than the average increase in the last ten years for the same period but is down 12.5% from the 719,183 created in the 12 months to February 2023. The economic sectors with the highest annual job growth percentages are construction (7.8%), transportation & communications (7.0%), and commerce (3.5%).
