Mexico’s President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has come in for widespread criticism after he revealed the phone number of a New York Times (NYT) journalist during a press conference on 22 February. The journalist had contacted López Obrador’s team for comment on a report into alleged links between his administration and drug trafficking organisations (DTOs). Days following the leak, social media users published the private phone numbers of Mexico’s 2024 presidential candidates Claudia Sheinbaum and Xóchitl Gálvez, among others.
