*Chile’s national statistics institute (INE) has released the latest employment figures which show that unemployment reached 8.4% in the November-January rolling quarter. This marks a year-on-year increase of 0.4 percentage points, which the INE attributed to an “increase in the labour force (3.4%) greater than that presented by employed people (2.9%)”. In terms of female employment, the unemployment rate increased 0.2 percentage points to 8.8%. The INE attributed this to a 4.7% increase in the workforce, which was higher than the 4.4% increase in employed women. According to the INE, the rate of informal employment stood at 27.6%, increasing by 0.3 percentage points in one year. In the Santiago Metropolitan region, the quarterly unemployment rate reached 9.1%, down 0.1 percentage points in 12 months.
