In brief: Panama's gov't approves plan for closure of key mine

*Panama’s government led by President Laurentino Cortizo has issued a resolution ordering state institutions to begin the process of closing the contentious Cobre Panamá copper mine. This follows a November supreme court ruling which struck down a contract between the Cortizo administration and the mine’s operator, Minera Panamá (MPSA) – a subsidiary of the Canadian mining firm First Quantum Minerals (FQM). Yesterday’s government resolution states that the environment ministry and the ministry of commerce & industry will ensure the physical stability of the mine and neighbouring areas and check for chemical pollution. It also orders an environmental audit of the mine’s closure, in order to assess the state of the mine, any environmental risks it poses, and mitigation measures.
