NICARAGUA: Weakening the judiciary
In January Nicaragua’s official gazette published changes to the country’s constitution which weaken the judiciary. Like all other institutions in the country, the judiciary is controlled by the authoritarian Frente Sandinista de Liberación Nacional (FSLN) government led by President Daniel Ortega, serving as a key tool in its crackdown on dissent. Initially approved by the FSLN-controlled 92-member unicameral legislature last year, the changes follow a massive purge of the judiciary also carried out late last year, which some have attributed to a power struggle within the ruling party.
