*Venezuela’s government has announced that it received a US$500m payment from Haiti to settle a debt that was owed as part of the Petrocaribe programme, in which Venezuela supplied discounted oil to Caribbean countries. A Venezuelan government statement said that “all international financial agencies categorised the debt as irrecoverable, given the complex economic and non-payment situation which has been seen in Haiti for several years.” The statement says that the debt was settled through “an agreement which enables the charging of the existing debt and, at the same time, contributes towards overcoming Haiti’s immense economic and social challenges”. However, Bloomberg reported that the US$500m represents only a fraction of what had been a US$2.3bn debt owed by Haiti to Venezuela.
