MEXICO: Mexicans march in defence of democracy
A sea of pink descended on the Zócalo, the main square in Mexico City (CDMX) on 18 February as large crowds gathered to protest in defence of democracy. The demonstration was the third in three years organised by civil society organisations to raise concerns over democratic backsliding. While the first two protests, which took place in November 2022 and February 2023, were specifically in defence of the national electoral institute (INE), the recent demonstrations were more general, seeking to defend a broad array of democratic institutions and principles.
