*Paraguay’s central bank (BCP) has released new figures which show that the country registered a trade deficit of US$71.6m in January 2024 – the first deficit since June 2023. This is up from a deficit of US$251.1m in January 2023. According to the BCP, exports in January totalled US$1.34bn, up 31.5% on January 2023. Meanwhile, imports totalled US$1.41bn, up 11.1% on the same month of the previous year. The BCP states that the increase in exports was primarily explained by increased exports of soybean, soy flour, and electricity. The main export markets were Argentina, representing 40.5% of the total, Brazil (33.8%), and Chile (7.4%).
