MEXICO: Notimex allegations touch Sheinbaum

Claudia Sheinbaum, the presidential candidate for the ruling Movimiento Regeneración Nacional (Morena), found herself having to defend her campaign against allegations of attempted illicit financing on 10 January. This came after Sanjuana Martínez Montemayor, the former director of now-shuttered national news agency Notimex, accused the labour ministry (STPS) of trying to divert money from Notimex worker settlement payments to Sheinbaum’s campaign, in accusations that have touched the core of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s government.
