COLOMBIA: Petro spars with attorney general
Once again, Colombia’s President Gustavo Petro has crossed swords with the attorney general, Francisco Barbosa – this time accusing Barbosa of mounting an institutional “coup” against the government with his office’s investigation into the financing of Petro’s 2022 election campaign. Petro’s latest attack on Barbosa marked an escalation of the hostile rhetoric between the two men. It also served as a reminder that Petro’s position is not entirely secure, coming against the backdrop of a congressional investigation, which could potentially pave the way for an impeachment vote.
