COSTA RICA: Struggling with insecurity
Costa Rica’s President Rodrigo Chaves claimed last week that there were six fewer homicides in January 2024 than the same month a year earlier, signifying a 7.8% decline. He attributed this to various security operations which saw over 3,000 arrests in a week. His claims come as Costa Rica registered a record 907 homicides last year, up from 654 in 2022 – itself a record year which has led his government to recently unveil plans to fast-track a package of 10 legislative bills on citizens’ security through the legislature.
