The frontrunner ahead of Panama’s presidential elections in May 2024, former president Ricardo Martinelli (Cambio Democrático, 2009-2014), has dramatically bowed out of the race. On 8 February, following the upholding by the supreme court (CSJ) of a money-laundering conviction against the former president, who was planning to seek re-election for his new political outfit, Realizando Metas (RM), Martinelli requested political asylum in Nicaragua, which the government led by President Daniel Ortega has duly granted.
