*Cuba’s tourism minister, Juan Carlos García Granda, has said that air connections are in place with 32 countries through 50 airlines, resulting in an average of 579 flights a week. However, he points out that this is still much less than the 764 weekly flights in 2019. García noted that a significant portion of the 2019 flights were from the US, with which there was a thaw in relations under former US president Barack Obama (2009-2017) which was reversed under his successor Donald Trump (2017-2021). García said that last year the country received 2.44m visitors which represented 70% of the government’s target but still 800,000 more than the previous year. Cuba’s crucial tourism sector has yet to recover from the blow dealt by the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic in 2020.
