*Brazil’s environment ministry has released the annual figures for the donations received and projects financed by the Amazon Fund, Brazil’s funding mechanism for rainforest protection initiatives. The fund had approved R$1.3bn (US$264m) for projects in 2023, the highest annual figure since the Amazon Fund was first set up in 2008. Notable projects launched last year include ‘Arco da Restauração’, an initiative to restore degraded land which had received R$450m in funding, and ‘Amazônia na Escola’, a project aimed at encouraging sustainable farming practices in the Amazon region and promoting healthy school meals which had received R$336m. A total of R$726m of international donations were announced last year. The main contributors were the governments of the UK (R$497m), Germany (R$186m), Switzerland (R$28m), and the US (R$15m). According to a government press release, other donations were announced last year but are still yet to be paid or under negotiation, including contributions from Norway (R$245m), Denmark (R$107m), the EU (R$107m), and further donations from the UK (R$218m) and US (R$2.44bn).
