Mujica Profile

Josà © Mujica, popularly knows as í¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹Å“Pepeí¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢, was born 20 May 1934 in Montevido. He left school before he was 16 and became involved with the Partido Socialista. In the 1960s he joined the left-wing rebel group the Movimiento de Liberacià ³n Nacional í¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Tupamerosí¢Ã¢â€š ¬  (MLN-T). Throughout this period he took part in guerilla operations at the same time as running his farm on the outskirts of the capital city. He survived six bullet wounds and escaped from prison twice. In 1972 Mujica was imprisoned in Punta Carretas prison in Montevideo, spending several years in solitary confinement at the bottom of a well.
