Peru registered the steepest decline in terms of ranking in the annual Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) table released on 30 January by the Berlin-based NGO Transparency International (TI). It fell 20 places to 121st, with its score down by three to 33, where 0 means ‘highly corrupt’ and 100 ‘very clean’. In its report TI said that “growing interference in the justice system by a majority coalition in the legislative branch is of grave concern”, adding that this was “coupled with the potential takeover in 2024 of the National Justice Board, which is responsible for appointing judges and prosecutors”.
