In brief: Consumer confidence up in Panama

*Panama’s chamber of commerce, industry, and agriculture (CCIAP) has published its bimonthly survey of consumer confidence, which it said stood at 84 points in January, up from 71 points in November 2023. The CCIAP measures consumer confidence on a scale between zero and 200 points, with 200 signifying maximum confidence and zero signifying minimum confidence. The latest CCIAP figures suggest that consumer confidence has reverted to its typical level seen over the past year, which hovered around the mid-80s before a steep drop from September-November 2023 when Panama was rocked by protests against a major mining project. The CCIAP found that, compared with November, Panamanians were more optimistic about their prospect of saving money, finding work, and seeing an improvement in their household finances over the next 12 months.
