In brief: Mexico hails increase in air travel

*Mexico’s tourism ministry (Sectur) has reported that 118.86m passengers travelled by air in Mexico on domestic and international flights in 2023. Tourism Minister Miguel Torruco stated that 63.69m people travelled on domestic flights in 2023, up 11.3% on 2022 and 18.6% on 2019, prior to the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic. The number of passengers registered on international flights was 55.17m, 10% more than 2022 and up 13.1% on 2019. The main domestic flight providers were Volaris and Viva Aerobus, which together transported 45.51m passengers. Volaris was also one of the top Mexican international flight providers, along with flag carrier Aeroméxico, which together registered 12.23m passengers. The main destination for flights was North America, which accounted for 84.5% of passengers on international flights. Europe accounted for 7.4% of international flights, up 2.3% on 2022, while Central and South America accounted for 7.6%, a 2.5% increase year-on-year.
