*Jan Hoffmann, chief of trade logistics at the United Nations (UN) Conference on Trade and Development (Unctad), has warned of “abnormally low water levels in the Panama Canal due to climate change impacts” citing this as an example of disruptions to global trade and supply chains. Speaking to journalists at UN headquarters in New York via video link from Geneva, Switzerland, he said that “low water levels have caused a decrease of 36% in ship transits compared to a year ago and are almost 62% down on two years ago” – impacts which he described as being “dramatic”.
