In brief: Bolivia’s gov’t highlights cost of pro-Morales protests

*Bolivia’s Economy Minister Marcelo Montenegro has said that roadblocks set up by supporters of former president Evo Morales (2006-2019) are costing the economy around US$128m per day. Protests by Morales’ supporters, which began on 22 January and spread yesterday, are being held to demand the holding of overdue judicial elections, with a key goal being to replace the constitutional court (TCP) which dealt a massive blow to Morales in late December by ruling that presidents can only serve a maximum of two terms – possibly dashing his hopes for a comeback in the 2025 elections. The director of the national hydrocarbon agency (ANH), Germán Jiménez, yesterday warned that the roadblocks are impacting the distribution of fuel along roads between the eastern department of Santa Cruz and the central city of Cochabamba, and between the city of Oruro and the northern region of the southern department of Potosí.
