*Costa Rica’s official export promotion agency (Procomer) has released new figures which show that the country’s goods exports totalled US$18.24bn in 2023, up 15.5% on 2022, a growth rate which Procomer describes as the “second most significant” of the past five years. It highlights medical devices as the country’s leading export, accounting for 42% of total exports and posting 28% growth year-on-year. This was followed by the agricultural sector, which accounted for 18% of exports and posted 11% growth. The country’s main exports in 2023 were: medical devices, which were worth US$7.62bn, bananas (US$1.18bn), pineapples (US$1.15bn), syrups and concentrates for fizzy drinks (US$645m) and coffee (US$346m). A Procomer statement cites its general manager, Laura López, as saying that the export sector represents 40.5% of the country’s GDP, with over 2,500 Costa Rican products exported to over 150 destinations, and provides employment to over 690,000 people.
