COSTA RICA: Another record year of homicides
Costa Rica finished 2023 with an unprecedented 907 homicides, up from 654 in 2022 – itself a record year. The surge in violence has been attributed to the growing presence of international drug trafficking organisations (DTOs), while other worrying indicators, such as unprecedented arrests of gang members accused of manufacturing and trafficking the synthetic drug fentanyl, continue to pile pressure on the right-of-centre Partido Progreso Social Democrático (PPSD) government led by President Rodrigo Chaves.
